Harry S. Truman Typed Letter Signed as President
Harry S. Truman Typed Letter Signed as President "Harry S. Truman". One page, 7" x 8.75", on White House letterhead, Washington, October 1, 1945, to Senator Harold H. Burton, Washington, D.C. The letter reads in part: "Dear Harold: Replying to your letter of September twenty-seventh regarding the Child Care Program, I have been trying to work it out as best I can. The difficulty is that the Lanham Act specifically provides that these activities shall cease at conclusion of hostilities but, I think, we are approaching the matter in a way that will at least be helpful."
During WW II, millions of women entered the workforce in war production areas. The need for an organized childcare program became apparent. Congress responded by including provisions in the Community Facilities Act of 1941, (commonly known as the Lanham Act), which created Lanham Act centers for child care. The establishment of the Lanham Act centers marked the first time the federal government became directly involved in providing childcare services to children who were not poor. The centers were open to all children whose parents worked in war production areas. The federally sponsored Lanham Act centers closed in 1946.
The letter has the usual fold but is otherwise beautiful, bright and in fine condition. Comes laid-in a custom paper folder specifically designed for collection of R. O. McNiel.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
