Harry Kernoff RHA (1900-1974) OFF LICEN
Harry Kernoff RHA (1900-1974) OFF LICENCE HOUSE, DALKEY signed lower right; inscribed on reverse oil on panel 34 by 44cm., 13.5 by 17.5in. Exhibited: ’Pictures by Harry Kernoff RHA’, Victor Waddington Galleries, Dublin, 13-22 October 1936, catalogue no. 8 (£10-10-0); ’Exhibition of Recent Paintings by Harry Kernoff RHA’, Mill's Hall, Dublin, 1-15 December 1937, catalogue no. 45 (£11-10-0) Painted circa 1936, this is a view of O’Loughlin’s off-licence, Ardbrugh Road, Dalkey. The building was originally an inn catering to the workers from the nearby granite quarry, which opened in 1815 to provide material for the building of Dunleary (afterwards Kingstown and then Dun Laoghaire) harbour. Ardbrugh was a thriving village in its own right during the operation of the quarry, which closed in the mid 19th century. In the 1930s to the 1950s O’Loughlin’s, as it had then become, was only licensed for selling alcohol for consumption off the premises, i.e . an “off-licence”. However it had a reputation in the Dalkey area as an after hours drinking house, and was particularly popular during the “holy hour” when the pubs in Dalkey were closed between 2.30pm and 3.30pm, which probably attracted Harry Kernoff to the location. The building was redeveloped as a two story dwelling and shop in the 1950s and is now a private residence. Kernoff records the work amongst his studio contents in 1938, as an oil painting measuring approximately 12 by 16 inches (see his annotated copy of the 1938 White Gallery catalogue, National Library of Ireland, LO P 158).
