This is a sketch for a large oil painting of Anglesea Market, also dated 1933, which was exhibited at the RHA, 1933, catalogue no. 266 [£10-10-0], presently in a private collection. Anglesea market was also a subject of interest to artist Flora H. Mitchell (1890-1973) whose celebrated publication, Vanishing Dublin, highlighted the importance of the outdoor markets located in the Moore Street area of Dublin. Anglesea market was among several others including; the Rotunda market, Taaffe's Market, the Norfolk Market and Gloucester Market which were all removed and replaced by the ILAC Centre in 1972. The Anglesea Market was famous for second-hand clothes, shoes and furniture all of which can be seen in this charming record of what has been called 'Dublin's forgotten acre' (See Vanishing Dublin, p. 64).
