(Harry Gilmor) Confederate Ranger; serving with and independently of John S Mosby. He was captured near Baltimore, far behind enemy lines, and was nearly hanged for espionage. Autograph Manuscript Signed, from David reamer, 15pp, Sept 21, 1877, 4to. Excellent content re a Confederate attack, under Major Gilmor, on a railroad. In part, "...July 11, 1864, I left Baltimore for Havre de Grace...this train and another...were both captured and burned...passengers...all made prisoners; by Maj Harry Gilmor of the Southern 'Confederate' rebel army. Gilmor and his Mounted Guerrillas had been...on a raid through Baltimore...I saw Gen [William B] Franklin take from his person...his purse or pistol, and hand it to Gilmor...After capturing all the officers, and...robbing them, the ladies...were ordered to occupy the rear car...the rest of the train was then...set on fire...The 'Confederate' force under Gilmor comprised two companies of about 150 men...largely of Marylanders...there was system in their villany...They saw an American flag...two rebel soldiers...tore it down, calling it a 'damned old rag'...The rebels were apparently in high spirts...while engaged in plunder and destruction...The first object of their hearts, seemed to be a desire to enter Baltimore, and rescue the downtrodden people of 'My Maryland'..."
