As part of the urban renewal project for the Erieview district of Cleveland, Ohio, a project planned by I.M. Pei, architect Peter van Dijk designed the Cuyahoga Savings Association building. In 1965, Lawrence & Associates commissioned Harry Bertoia to create the Hanging Hemisphere for the interior design of this space.

Harry Bertoia welcomed the opportunity to work with architects; commissioned pieces provided Bertoia a forum for creating works on a grand scale. Throughout his career Bertoia worked with many architects, the resulting sculptures are arguably the most impressive in his oeuvre.

The Hanging Hemisphere by Bertoia measures nearly 12 feet in diameter making this example one of the largest works in the dandelion series. Despite the scale and the complexity of the form, this sculpture is delicate and bright, exhibiting Bertoia's mastery of proportion and skilled metalworking.
