Walter Harrison Cady was born in Gardner, Massachusetts. Primarily a magazine and book illustrator, his work was published in LIFE, the Saturday Evening Post, Country Gentleman, and the Ladies Home Journal.
In 1920, Cady bought a harbor-front estate in Rockport, Massachusetts, where he turned to oil painting, longing to be what he described as a "regular" artist. Cady focused his art on landscapes and marine subjects.
