American writer (1835–1921) remembered for her novels, poems, and detective stories. AQS on an off-white 5 x 7.75 sheet. Spofford writes out the first three stanzas of ‘The Violet.’ Beginning, “Soar, solemn heavens, your splendid height, And then in flashing darkness bend, Wrap the sweet earth about with night, And wide dim fields from end to end, Lying far off and low, Serenely with your brooding mystery blend.” Signed at the bottom, “Harriet Prescott Spofford.” In fine condition, with some mild toning to corners from mounting remnants on reverse.
