ALS signed “H. B. Stowe,” one page, lightly-lined, 5 x 7.5, September 30, 1884. Letter to Mr. Mason. In full: “Yesterday evening I mailed to you a Sam Lawson Indian Story & a letter. I have just ascertained this morning that we are to leave Nahant on Thursday the 5th of October—& as I am anxious to know that my manuscript is safe in your hands will you please advise me immediately of its reception, before I leave Nahant.” In fine condition, with extra vertical fold to left side, uniform light toning, trimmed top edge, small repair to paper loss at lower left, and signature a bit cramped.

Although perhaps best known for Uncle Tom’s Cabin, the author wrote and edited numerous additional stories in the decades that followed. Many of her own tales focused on life in New England, including many told from the point of view of Sam Lawson, a lazy but kindhearted storyteller whose humor reveals Stowe’s views on women’s domestic lives and their relationships with men. Great reference to one of Stowe’s New England characters. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
