<B>Harriet Beecher Stowe:<I> Dred, A Tale of The Great Dismal Swamp.</B></I></B></I> (Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1856), first edition, first printing, 2 vols. vi + 329 + 6 pages of publisher's ads; v + 370 pages, in the publisher's original decorated, dark brown cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spines and blind embossing to the boards (with the 20 embossed dots on each board). 8vo (5" x 8"). First Printing of vol. 1: in line 3 on p. 88, the ascender of the "d" in "dictatorial" almost directly below the vertical stroke of the "r" in the line just above it. First Printing of vol. 2: "the Dicksons are fewer, and have" in the ninth line up from the bottom of p. 370. Stowe's sequel to <I>Uncle Tom's Cabin</B></I> loosely based on the Nat Turner Rebellion. The covers have wear; rubbing, bumping, spine is torn at top and bottom, and cocked. General light soil to exterior and interior.
