Harriet Beecher Stowe AQS 1894
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Harriet Beecher Stowe autograph quotation signed. Single page, octavo, dated 14 February 1894. Stowe pens a moving quotation from chapter twelve of her novel, ''Uncle Tom’s Cabin'': “Not one throb of anguish / Not one tear of the oppressed / Is forgotten by the Man of / Sorrows, the Lord of Glory. / In his patient, generous bosom / He bears the anguish of a world. / Uncle Tom’s Cabin / Chap. 12 / Harriet Beecher Stowe / Feby. 14Th 1894.” Published in 1852, Stowe’s novel sold 300,000 copies in the first year and over one million copies by 1860. The book widely sensitized the North to the dark side of slavery and fanned the flames of disunion. This moving passage appears just after the slave woman, Lucy, commits suicide by jumping in the Ohio River after her child was taken from her and sold. An emotional quotation which embodies the anti-slavery sentiment. Light toning; left margin exhibits some chipping. Near fine condition.
