Harper Lee Autograph Letter Signed
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Harper Lee autograph letter signed, dated 1 February 1995. Written on a card featuring an illustration of the quaint Walton DeFuniak Library on the front. Letter is written in fine, clear script with a very bold ''Harper Lee'' signature in black ink. Here, the celebrated author of ''To Kill a Mockingbird'' writes to a Mr. Chestnut from the Humanities department at Auburn University, who presumably asked Lee to donate some of her personal letters. Reads in full: ''Dear Mr. Chestnut: When I am away from Monroeville and mail is forwarded to me, I don't always get it. I feel sure that your first letter is in some postal Limbo unknown to us. Thank you for your most kind request. I wish I could honor it, but such personal papers as I have will go to my alma mater. The University of Alabama was kind enough to award me an honorary degree a few years ago, and I feel that my posthumous baggage belongs there. Again thank you for thinking of me. Harper Lee''. Also includes the original envelope addressed by Harper Lee in her own hand with a return address of a P.O. Box in Monroeville, Alabama. Card measures 5'' x 7.5'' when unfolded. Fine condition.
