Harper Lee autograph letter signed, a personal four page letter penned on 7 August 2005. The Pulitzer prize winning author discusses her deteriorating eyesight caused by macular degeneration and other topics. She writes: ''Dear Dr. Engleheart...I am spoiled rotten by people feeling sorry for me, and I do so enjoy it. It is most distressing to learn that Macular d. is in your family and I pray it skips you. My father's family is a textbook example of it. We think he had it in his last years, but then it was called senile blindness, a simple & uncomplicated description of what it is. His mother was blind in her old age as was his brother and his brother's daughter. It has skipped my elder sisters, our brother died when he was 30 so we don't know what happened with him. Seriously, though don't feel sorry for me; I have had a life of spectacular rewards. If you ever hear me complain, knock me in the head. I think the thing I thank God most at this stage of my life is I've always been a reader. Now that it's difficult to read, I can say about a lot of things, 'I've already read something like that.' Especially history! And all this E-Mail nonsense - forget it! Whatever happened to the telephone? I do miss driving though, I can cruise around Monroeville but don't dare get on the highway. Friends are kind. Please forgive me! I've maundered now for three - now four - pages to someone I hardly know discussing my afflictions as if to a family member. I'm truly sorry - Sincerely yours, Nelle Lee.'' A Christmas card accompanies the letter signed ''...Merry Christmas! Nelle Harper Lee / I think I can see better thank u!''. Each of the four pages measures 6'' x 9'' and Christmas card measures 6.5'' x 4.5. Both include original envelopes and are in fine condition.
