Harper Lee autograph letter signed, dated 2 February 1996, also with holograph envelope signed ''Lee''. Letter, in blue ink, is addressed to a Mr. Salter and discusses her fraught relationship with the townspeople of Monroeville, Alabama, where she still lives today and was the setting for her famed novel ''To Kill a Mockingbird.'' Reads in full: ''Dear Mr. Salter: The print is fabulous and all I can say besides thank you is: you shouldn't have, but I'm so glad you did! I shall enjoy it for the rest of my days. You are far too generous -- you put me on the spot every time I sign a book for you. It's a pleasure to sign my name for a gentleman! Thank you for your kind invitation to see Gregory Peck, but I'm afraid I'm not a fly-on-the wall physioganny. I would like a report on how things went, though I expect that a delegation from Monroeville will ambush him, and I dread it because he is a most dear personal friend. I hope they don't discomfort him with their invitations to come look at the courthouse, etc. The prime movers of that sort of thing are newcomers to Monroeville, and I'm not acquainted with most of them. They make it their business to mind my business and I resent it. On that cheerful note I shall leave you! Most sincerely, Nelle Harper Lee''. Letter measures 5.5'' x 7.75'' on two pages, front and verso, and has one fold from mailing. Also includes original postmarked envelope in Lee's hand, including her signature ''Lee'' and return address in Monroeville. Near fine.
