El Paso, Texas legal document from the case of Texas vs. John Selman, the man who killed notorious Texas outlaw John Wesley Hardin. Dated 25 November 1895, document concerns the testimony of J.E. Turner, likely one of the witnesses at the Acme Saloon the night of the famous shooting. Notorious gunman Hardin was a prolific outlaw and murderer in mid 19th century Texas, though at the time of his killing was recently released from a 16 year prison stint and had acquired a license to practice law, possibly putting his criminal ways behind him. Nevertheless, he quarreled with the wrong man in 1895; Constable John Selman Sr. shot Hardin point-blank in the head after a dispute between Hardin and Selman’s son earlier in the day. In the trial where this document originated, Selman claimed self-defense and a hung jury acquitted him. Also included in the lot is a sepia tone photo of Selman with a holstered gun and no nonsense expression. 8” x 7” document and 4.5” x 6.75” photo framed together for an overall size of 17.5'' x 12''. Minor chips to top, trimmed at bottom margin and separation to middle fold. Writing remains dark and legible. Very good condition.
