Harden Hand Grenade Star Fire Extinguisher
Just toss it on the fire and watch the fire go out. The Harden Company was a Chicago-based firm that specialized in these fire extinguishing devices. This blue glass globe "Star" hand grenade is in mint condition. It has the original wire hanger, along with the patented sealed stopper. 8" tall x 5.5" dia. These devices were used to put out fires by throwing them at the base of the flames. The globe would explode, and its fluid contents would extinguish the flames by releasing volumes of gas clouds, displacing the oxygen. The fluid was typically carbon tetrachloride. Per the Harden advertisement, "the blue glass globe is filled with a chemical fluid, hermetically sealed with a patented stopper, contents are not deteriorated by age, climate, frost, etc. and will not injure person or property in the slightest. Hung up in your home, office, or factory, they are instantly accessible and invariably effective." Rare and unique. Part of cork is missing and the hand grenade' is about 2/3 full. Care must be taken to not release the fluid, however, because it has been proven to be harmful to humans and other animals. - Ken & Rosemary Roberts Collection -59218 City: ChicagoCounty: State: IL
