When U.S. President Andrew Jackson signed into law an act which permitted banks to reject paper money as payment, citizens began hoarding all metal coins. This resulted in the production of privately made knock-offs such as this one. The obverse depicts Lafayette, a design used on many such "Hard Times" tokens. The reverse, on this piece, advertises a Massachusetts purveyor of shoes, furs and the like. Other businesses utilized the same obverse but touts their own unique wares. JC-30101-234 JC-30334
