Happy & contented slaves. Letter from C
Happy & contented slaves. Letter from Capt. William B. Alexander, 23rd Mass. Infantry, writing to his wife, from Camp J.A. Andrew (Virginia), Dec. 24, 1861, 4 pp. "There are already 33 steamers & vessels here to take us. I do not think we shall go any further than the Potomac river which is but a short distance from here. But can't tell anything about it...Sunday evening Lieuts. R & A, Sergt. Drew and self went to visit some Negro slaves on a Plantation about 2 miles from here. We had a nice time, the darkeys were glad to see us & we got them to sing some of their Methodist hymns which was first rate. There was...men & women that live in a log house of one story. The room below was not as big as your room & they told me that their overseer gave them a pack of meal...& a pack to the children a week to live on & if they got anything else it was their good luck, that was rather small fare, I thought. But they seemed happy & contented. We had real fun by their queer talk & remarks...." With postmarked envelope, lacking stamp. Fine.
