Signed and inscribed to Princess Chinquilla. 4 1/4" by 6 1/2". Princess Chinquilla collection. Captain "Happy Jack" Sutton, whose full name may have been Jackson Sutton, was born in 1853 in Texas, and worked in America as a cowboy. He was a performer in a wild west show being performed with Wirth Brothers Wild West Combined Shows in 1890; and later, in 1897, with Probasco's Circus. The New Zealand times of 11 January 1897 says that he "more recently was with Fitzgerald Bros.’ Circus round these parts, is in town, looking well, and fully recovered from that shaking up he got in Auckland some three years ago, when a "cow horse" threw him in the ring. Captain Jack has been working down the country from Auckland with a small show, in which an oxy-ether lantern shows American views and cowboy life and adventures, whilst personal reminiscences are told by the “ Cap,” who has “ bin thar.”"
