Beloved Danish author (1805–1875) best known for such classic fairy tales as The Ugly Duckling, The Red Shoes, and The Emperor’s New Clothes. AQS in Danish on a pale blue faintly lined 7 x 2.75 slip, signed “H. C. Andersen.” In full (translated): “If the world feels too hard to endure, remember Christ shed tears of blood.” Andersen’s religious beliefs have been described by noted scholar Johan de Mylius as stemming from “an undogmatic sort of Christianity,” and religious motifs crop up throughout Andersen’s published oeuvre. Two vertical folds (one lightly touching signature), mild wrinkling, and scattered tiny spots (lightly touching signature), otherwise fine condition. The writing is clear and dark throughout. Stirring and unusual! Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
