Hanging of a Negro Woman. Letter, Richm
Hanging of a Negro Woman. Letter, Richmond, Va., 1852, 2 pp., from one cousin to another. "There is to be a Negro woman hung in this city on the 10th of next month for the murder of Mrs. Winston and her daughter...She entered the house in the dead of the night and killed them. She attempted to kill Mr. Winston but did not succeed. When she left the house she thought he was dead. He was very much injured and thought by some that he would die. The people of Richmond are exasperated about it and think that hanging was too good for the Negro, that she ought to be burned. I don't know what the Negroes are getting to." Unique look at slave rage and punishment in Richmond. Small stain on p. 2, else fine.
