silver gelatin prints, 7" x 9.5", mounted on larger grey boards, ca 1900, printed from the original negatives taken by Alexander Gardner on Nov. 10, 1865. In the first of these images, Wirz is shown standing on the gallows listening to his death sentence, while Union guards look on. The next image was taken moments after the drop. Wirz refused a pardon contingent upon his denouncing Confederate President Jefferson Davis as the Andersonville mastermind. Purportedly, his last words on the gallows were: I was only following orders. A pair of iconic images.

Condition: Matted and shrink wrapped. One mount with waterstain slightly affecting image.
