Handwoven Chimayo Natural Stepped Medallion Style
Featured in this lot is a Hand Woven Chimayo Natural Stepped Medallion Style Rug, circa mid 1900s. The stripes are clearly derived from the Rio Grande blanket, and the center design is an outgrowth of Saltillo tapestry techniques. Along with a uniform texture obtained by the use of commercial yarn obtained from a standard source, the style becomes distinct, recognizable. Distinctly Hispanic in heritage and dating to the middle sixteenth century Spanish settlers, this Santa Fe New Mexico style of weaving, begun in the early years of this century, is basically two stripe bands and a centre design at a minimum. This became known as the "Chimayo Design." The center geometric medallion is black, brown and creamy white, lower and upper geometric medallions are black and brown. Earth tones of brown dominate the stripe bands, solid red colour broad bands accentuate, white fringe finishes the long axis. A beautifully stunning rug that is well suited for the ranch lifestyle. Measures 82"L x 56"W.*
