This quilt is one of the prettiest combinations of color and pattern that I've seen in a while. It is one that was used, but carefully and gently, and has only a few of the concerns that one often sees on quilts from this era. Made sometime between 1900 to the early 1930's, it is of cotton flour and sugar sacking in blue plaids, dots, floral prints, geometric patterns, with an ivory colored solid background and on the reverse side. Cotton batting filler. <p>

The hand stitching is fairly small and for the most part even, though when I look at the stitches that formed the quilting pattern, I get the feeling that a very weary woman may have done some of the quilting at the end of a very long day, in not the best of lighting, so that in a few places, there is a bit of wavering in the usually straight and even lines of stitching. <p>

I have found no places on the top of the quilt where the stitching has come loose, in either the piecing or the quilting threads. No tears, rips, patches, or staining on the pattern side of the quilt. <p>
<p>
There are only a few places of concern that I need to report. Along the edges of the quilt, there are a few places where the fabric has frayed and worn thin and the batting has begun to peek out. There are only three areas where there is batting actually outside the fabric and at most a total of five areas where there is any fraying along the edge, and this is mostly on only one side of the quilt, as if perhaps that side may have brushed ...
