Handsome Dan Mixture Tobacco Tin c.1900-09
This is an extremely scarce vintage tobacco tin. This is the coveted "Handsome Dan Mixture" by L.L. Stoddard of New Haven, Connecticut. The mixture was named after the mascot of Yale University. The tin features an image of "Handsome Dan" the bulldog on the front with the text "Yale Mascot). Handsome Dan became the mascot of Yale in the year 1889 and is believed to be the first live mascot in American history. The tin dates back to approximately the turn of the century (circa 1900-1909). The tin measures approximately 4.5 inches by 3.25 inches by 1.5 inches. The tin is still in nice condition for its age (100+ years), with no heavy dents or dings. It has a crackled and aged patina that adds to its vintage charm. The entire colored surface has this crackled finish due to age. The front of the tin does have some surface missing.
