Handcut PIETA Carrara Marble Statue
PIETA - Michelangelo's most famous masterpiece, the Pieta was sculptured in the year 1500 when the artist was but 25 years of age. Like his original at St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome, Italy, this reproduction was carved from ONE flawless piece of Carrara marble taken from Michelangelo's own quarry near his hometown of Pietrasanta, Italy. This piece was recreated by Pietrasanta artisans for the Palace of Living Art at the Movieland Wax Museum. It weighs over 8 tons and took 2 years to complete to perfection. Note Michelangelo's name carved across the robe of The Virgin. He added the signature "Michelangelo Buonorroti of Florence Made This" after the completion of the statue when Michelangelo got word of arguments over the artist's identity. It is the only one of Michelangelo's works to bear his name. Includes photos of the making of this exquisite masterpiece reproduction.
