Original hand written Music Score by Hall Johnson with an Original Photograph of the Hall Johnson Negro Choir
An exceptionally rare C. 1930 hand written music score of "Honor! Honor!" by Hall Johnson (1888-1970). Johnson was a choral director, composer, arranger, and violinist, who dedicated his career to preserving the integrity of the Negro spiritual as it had been performed during the era of slavery. In 1925 he formed the Hall Johnson Choir, the first professional group of its kind. He enjoyed a successful concert and recording career for more than three decades in the United States and abroad. During his professional life Johnson coached hundreds of distinguished musicians, including Marian Anderson. Virtually every black singer of note has performed Johnson's solo compositions and arrangements. The photograph is an original C. 1930 9"X7" of the Hall Johnson Choir. Also pictured is assistant conductor Jester Hairston (1901-2000). Hairston composed or arranged more than 300 gospel spirituals in films such as Green Pastures and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. He was one of the first black actors in the Screen Actors Guild, among his notable works was the song "Amen" from the Sidney Poitier film, Lilies of the Field. Professionally framed.
