Hand-Engraved “George Washington’s Tomb” Snuffbox
c. 1860 Civil War Era, Hand-Engraved “Tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon” George Washington Related, Decorative Silver Plate Snuffbox, Choice Very Fine+.
This George Washington theme original Oval Snuffbox measures 3.25" long x 2" wide and accurately pictures the outer gate and entry area to the Tomb of George Washington located at Mount Vernon which was completed in 1831. Dating is simple as the central field is clearly engraved, “PATd JAN. * 24 1860”. There is some expected toning and original patina on the outside of the box and the inside is naturally tarnished and original with overall light even wear from actual use. All details are clear and distinct, including a well dressed woman with a small child approaching the outer gate from its right side. A wonderful specimen of decorative Washingtonia.
George Washington died in the master bedchamber at Mount Vernon on December 14, 1799. In his will, he directed that he be buried on his beloved Mount Vernon estate. He also selected a site for a new brick Tomb to replace the original burial vault that was deteriorating. The new Tomb was completed in 1831, and Washington's body was moved there along with the remains of Martha Washington and other family members. Currently, special wreathlaying ceremonies take place at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily, April through October, at George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, Museum & Gardens.
