Hand-Colored Ornithology Lithographs
37 Bound Hand-Colored Lithographs From Spencer Fullerton Baird’s Birds of North America. On offer is a beautiful set of 37 hand-colored lithographic plates from the 1858 Pacific Railway survey of a proposed route for a transcontinental railway. Spencer Fullerton Baird, then Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, insisted that all of the railroad survey expeditions conducted in the 1850s be staffed with naturalists. This set is contained in an old shelf worn binding featuring tan cloth with a morocco spine label with gilt titles, 4to (9” x 11.25”), with an old library label on the inside front pastedown, significant toning to plate one and twelve, slight bit of staining at the foot of the spine and back board, corners bumped, else the contents are sound and in very good condition. Latin names for the birds written on the verso of each plate.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
