Hand-Colored Engraving by Georg Balthasar Probst, Vue de Groeningen
A fine 18th-century hand-colored perspective view by Georg Balthasar Probst, titled Vue de Groeningen du Cote de l'Orient. This optical print, or vue d'optique, depicts a lively canal scene in Groningen, The Netherlands, seen from the eastern perspective. Detailed figures, sailing vessels, and architecture line the waterway, all executed with vivid hand-applied color. The scene features bustling dockworkers handling barrels and goods, alongside townhouses, boats, and a church spire prominently rising in the background. Probst's name is associated with the Augsburg publishing house that specialized in these perspective views, often intended for use with zograscopes, optical devices popular in the 18th century. This engraving is numbered No. 18 in the lower margin and contains the customary French title inscription. Presented under glass in an ebonized and gilt-edged wood frame with original backing intact.
