Featured in this lot is a Hand Carved Indian Ebony Procession of Elephants, circa mid 1900s. Depicted is a Ceylonese procession of 4 elephant of graduating size, on a bridge over tumultuous water. Their tusks, eyes, and toenails are inlaid with bone. Indian ebony is sometimes called coromandel or Macassar wood and is from Ceylon/Sri Lanka. Wood carving is a traditional craft in Sri Lanka, and it has a long history that goes back to ancient times. The art of wood carving is practiced by skilled craftsmen influenced by both Indian and Southeast Asian styles. The carvings are often intricate and detailed, with designs that reflect the country’s rich cultural heritage.
