The Hampden Watch Company originated in 1866 as the Mozart Watch Company in Providence, Rhode Island. Dueber acquired Hampden and relocated both companies to Canton, Ohio, in 1888. Hampden was known for advancements such as introducing the first American 16-size, 23-jewel movement in 1890. The Dueber-Hampden companies formally merged in 1923, but declining demand led to bankruptcy in 1927. In 1930, the firm's equipment and several employees were transferred to the Soviet Union, where they contributed to establishing the First State Watch Factory, influencing early Russian watch production.
