Hall of Famers Multi-Signed Baseball with Cobb
1950 Hall of Famers Multi-Signed Baseball with Cobb, Speaker, Baker. A little known baseball footnote found the greatest stars of the pre-war diamond coming out of retirement for a single game at Dallas' Cotton Bowl to open the 1950 Texas League season, facing just one batter (Dizzy Dean walked him on a three and two count) before turning the reins over to the youngsters. It was the brainchild of Texas oilman Dick Burnett, whose stunt resulted in the largest crowd ever to attend a minor league baseball game. A fantastic image in a clipping from the next day's newspaper, affixed to an included scrapbook page, finds a line-up of legends in Dallas Eagles uniforms: Dizzy Dean, Mickey Cochrane, Charlie Gehringer, Tris Speaker, Ty Cobb, Charlie Grimm, Duffy Lewis, Frank "Home Run" Baker and Travis Jackson. Here we present an Official Texas League baseball signed the day of that geriatric All-Star Game, with the signatures of all eight aging legends (no Grimm) appearing. Gehringer and Baker's ink has "hazed" slightly to account for grades of 6/10, but all the rest present at 8/10 or better, providing tremendous visual strength to match the outrageous roster. For several years this ball had been on display at the museum at the Texas Rangers' ballpark in Arlington before the owner consigned it to Heritage. Included are various newspaper clippings recounting this unique event, and the loan paperwork and identification plaque from the Ballpark at Arlington museum. LOA from PSA/DNA.
