This is a halibut fishing hook used by Northwest Coastal Indians. A clever device which only captures medium sized fish to insure conservation. This hook was clearly used as it shows signs of having been restrung with cordage. A raven effigy is carved in the upper piece made of cedar to give it buoyancy over the more dense alder bottom piece. The hole drilled top center was used for a retrieval line. The barb is an iron rod and may be a period replacement for the traditional bear bone, giving it more strength. Made of two woods at 11.5 in. long X 5 in. C. 1800's. From Blaine, Washington. Providence is from a family relocated to Washington state from Iceland. C. 1800s. Please see photos for details.
