Half-stocked percussion plains-type rifle by J. Hapgood of Shrewsbury, Mass.; .58 cal., 32-1/2” half round/half octagon barrel, brown finish, tiger striped wood stock with brass patch box, brass trigger guard, numerous inlaid brass pierced decorations, brass butt plate, ramrod ferrules and barrel key escutcheons; horn fore tip; later added wood piece in front of the horn fore tip that goes to the barrel’s end and is mounted with the front ramrod ferrule. This gun is in overall good to very good condition showing considerable browning on the barrel with some moderate pitting around the firing area, generally good bore, good action, engraved back action lock plate; wood stock is overall very good showing a nice patina and some old small losses along the fore stock with a couple mars from carry and storage; the inlays include a star in front of the patchbox, a star, half moon and arrow on the left side of the butt stock, a square silver plaque at the top of the wrist and two triangles facing off from the left butt plate. A really nice old plains rifle made during the mid-1800s. Est.: $1,000-$1,500.
