Half stock percussion plains type rifle, .45 caliber, 35” barrel, 51” overall. Marked “J. Wilt & Co, Dayton, O” for Ohio. The rifle shows a medium to heavy weight barrel, measuring almost 1” across the flats. The stock has been artificially striped. The stock has been set back to a half stock with a brass nose cap and ramrod ferrules added in the 19th century. The rifle shows double set triggers, brass mounts, and is in untouched condition with heavy brown patina on barrel. Normal rust and aging, stock good with a couple of losses around the top edge of the lock. The sheet metal brass floorplate at the toe is slightly bent. Action working. Lock marked “Pattridge”, “Warranted”. Dayton, Ohio was not far up the river from St. Louis and this rifle is the type that could have gone west with the mountain man and the fur trade.
