Half Plate Tintype of Union Boys,
Half Plate Tintype of Union Boys,
showing a squad of twelve unidentified infantry complete with NCOs staged in front of what looks to be a stucco wall. The group is uniformed in a distinctive nine-button short uniform coat with low cut collar and pronounced rounded skirt in the style of the “chasseur” jacket. The jackets appear to be piped in the light blue branch of service color. The men uniformly wear cloth gaiters that were never popular in US service and rarely seen after 1861 except in Zouave regiments. Trousers are tinted a light blue. Based on the uniform it is thought that these men are from a New York or Pennsylvania regiment. Housed in a union case having an unusual scenic “town and country” front cover with typical corner and edge wear.
The plate is in EXC condition with a single chemical spot in the upper left near the mat line. Strong clarity. The varnished surface shows spots of uneven drying when held at an angle.
