Half Eagles 1858 PCGS MS64

Half Eagles 1858 PCGS graded Mint State 64. Radiant golden mint luster casts a beautiful glimmer of rose iridescence. This coin is graded as a borderline Gem and meets every expectation that an Mint State 64 should, and then some. Mint State examples of this date are proven rarities at any grade level. In spite of a mintage reported to be 15,136, surviving half eagles have proven to be much rarer than their southern branch mint contemporaries, no doubt, owing to the fact that the bulk of available Philadelphia Mint gold was transported to Europe during the Civil War in payment of goods imported to supply and defend the Union, and eventually melted.

PCGS claims seven certified examples according their current population report and only a few others at the lower Mint State classifications. They have certified none higher. Other than the Harry Bass Jr. example, sold by Bowers and Merena in 1999, no other specimen grading this high has been offered at auction in recent memory. Here is a landmark rarity, destined someday to reside in the ultimate museum quality collection. Estimate $11,500.00-$15,000.00
