Half Dollars 1853 A&R MS63

Half Dollars 1853 Arrows and Rays. Mint State 63. Uniformly toned in a multicolored blend, primarily shades of sea green, rose and champagne gold. There are no apparent contact marks and trivial light hairlines are well concealed beneath the toning.

The obverse/reverse "Arrows and Rays" combination was struck only in 1853, and today is recognized as an important one-year only half dollar type. The design change signified coins struck using lighter planchets, which were decreased from 13.36 grams to 12.44 grams in weight when bullion silver prices increased. Production of the revised design began in May of the year. Even though there were over 3 1/2 million struck at the Philadelphia Mint, today they are scarce in Mint State, especially so at the Choice level and higher, and a necessary addition to any complete type set of half dollars. Estimate $3,000.00-$4,000.00
