Half Dollars 1840(O) Revof 38 PCGS MS64

Half Dollars 1840 (O) Reverse of 1838. PCGS graded Mint State 64. Sharply struck. Lightly toned in a visually impressive blend of light gray and rose, with a darker toning streak diagonally crossing the eagle's left wing. Surfaces display only the most trivial of light contact marks, which without ample magnification are nearly undetectable. There is no question about the borderline Gem status of this example.

Liberty Seated halves of this date, struck using the Reverse of 1838, were minted at the New Orleans minting facility, without the O mint mark designation. This scarce variety can be identified by the so-called "Medium Letters" reverse, whereby UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is noticeably larger on this coin than on others dating 1839 to 1841. Also, a trio of somewhat jagged pie-shaped die cracks appear at the lower right reverse, characteristic of the issue. Obviously, this emission was a result of an emergency situation, where dies possibly pre-used at the Philadelphia Mint were hurriedly shipped to the southern branch for use. Mintage is reported to be 112,000 and Mint State survivors are rare.

PCGS has graded just three at this level and none higher. It is up there with the finest they have seen. For specialist in the Liberty Seated half dollar series, this variety is an integral addition to a complete set. For collectors seeking truly rare coins of unusual historical import, the fact that it is a unidentified New Orleans Mint product is meaningful, as few coins in the history of the U.S. Mint boast that status. Here is a great coin, worthy of an appreciative home in a world class collection. Estimate $10,000.00-$15,000.00
