Hal Foster - Original Art Panel from Prince Valiant (King Features Syndicate, 1944). Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 18, 1892, Foster labored as a prize fighter and gold prospector before beginning his artistic training at the Chicago Art Institute in 1921. Originally working on magazine illustrations and advertising posters, Foster became an assistant to J. Allan St. John, one of the top illustrators of his time, and the artist most associated with Tarzan. Essentially being in the right place at the right time, Foster was offered a brief stint on the new Tarzan comic strip, becoming the permanent artist in 1931. Quickly tiring of the formulaic strips he was given to work with, he created Prince Valiant, a strip set in the days of King Arthur and his Knights, a strip that would ensure his fame for years to come. Offered here is a prime example of Foster's work, featuring Prince Valiant and King Aguar. Originally part of a larger page, it was common for Foster to cut panels from his strips and send them to fans. This panel has been inscribed "Best wishes from Prince Valiant and Hal Foster" in the upper right corner. Measuring approximately 8.25" x 11.5", this panel is in excellent condition, and is a superb example of Foster's draftsmanship.
