Haitian Revolution and Slavery Content Letter
Haitian Revolution and Slave Related Content Letter in French (untranslated), 2 pages, laminated to display both integral sheets to an overall size of 16" x 12.5", "Augusta", Dec. 4, 1825, from a Mrs. Dugas de Vallen, addressed to a Mr. L.F. Dugas in Frederickstown, Maryland. Letter is untranslated but content seems to be regarding claims for restitution around ownership of a plantation (including slaves) in Haiti, which the writer refers to as "St. Domingue" in the letter. St. Domingue had previously been under French rule, but the slave rebellions started in 1791 eventually ousted the French and established the independent Republic of Haiti in 1804. There is a holographic excerpt titled "From the Journal of debats, 16th Septemr / Hayti: execution of the ordnance of Sepr 1- 1875." on the verso with content in English explaining the requirements needed to file a claim for losses suffered as a result of the Haitian Revolution. In part: "The Colnt, or their attornies are requested to hand or to transmit under cover to the Minister of France, the particulars relative to their claims, and to furnish as far as possible answers to the following points, to be signed by the claimant. 1st the name of the place in the North, West or South where the property was situated 2nd the Name of the Parish and quarter 3d name by which the habitation is known 4th by what title it is claimed, and whether as owner of the whole or part 5 the quantity of land in square (curreage) St. Domingo measure, and the boundaries of the Plantation 6th Cultivation to which it was devoted 7th the number of negroes who were on the plantation..." There is a tear hole about .75" in diameter caused by the the opening of the wax seal and the remnant remains attached and present. The document is entirely laminated, but remains very legible and content certainly merits more research.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
