ABOUT THE ARTIST: Prefete Duffaut is a well-known Haitian artist who was born in Jacmel, Haiti, on January 1, 1923. He claimed to have had a vision of a woman wanting him to decorate her house. It led him to carve a decoration for the altar of a chapel in the Notre Dame de Lourdes. In 1944 he introduced himself to Rigaud Benoit, visiting Jacmel as a talent scout for the Art Center. William Krauss, an American journalist living in Jacmel, saw some of his drawings and encouraged him to make some paintings on masonite and send them to DeWitt Peters. Duffaut was invited to join the Centre d'Art in 1948. . In 1951, Duffaut painted a famous mural at the Holy Trinity Cathedral, one of the five famous artists whose work is memorialized in this majestic building. He paints fantastic scenes of cities, often with sea coasts. One of his paintings was in the collection of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. It was sold for $6900 by Sotheby's on April 25, 1996. Duffaut's work is included in many permanent collections, such as: The Davenport Museum of Art in Iowa, the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa, the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
