This rare and large painting by famed Haitian artist Seneque Obin (1893-1977) exemplifies Obin's artistic talent, as well as his interest in historical subject matter. Seneque followed in the footsteps of his older brother Philome, whom many feel is Haiti's greatest painter. The Obin family hailed from Cap-Haitien, a colonial town on the northern coast of Haiti. Philome Obin founded the Cap-Haitien school, which reflects Haiti's greater naive art movement but is also characterized by the use of refined linear elements, meticulous paint handling, and subject matter reflecting both daily life and the country's history.

This painting is entitled La Reine et le Roi d'Haiti and is signed Seneque Obin Cap Haitien. It depicts the king and queen under a large spreading tree surrounded by symbols of their monarchy under what would appear to be a striped lawn.

The painting measures 23" x 29" and the frame measures 26" x 32. It is oil on masonite. There is some paint fading and cracking in the uppermost part of the painting above the trees. Otherwise, it is in excellent condition.

This painting was purchased by Vincent Price on a trip to Haiti in the 1950s.

Current prices for Seneque's work range upward from $10,000 for a piece of this size and scope. This work has never before been offered on the art market. This is a rare piece by this second-generation Haitian master with superb provenance.
