About the Artist: Gerard was born in Port-au-Prince, 10 July 1927; He left school to become a tile setter, and started to paint in 1951. In 1959 he met Dewitt Peters when he exhibited a sample of his work at the Centre de Art . . Gerard later devoted himself to painting fulltime. He is considered one of the most esteemed primitive painters. He focuses on Voodoo, landscapes, and themes of country life. Valcin was also a voodoo priest and he translated a great deal of his religious convictions onto the canvas. He developed a style that is so original that his work can be easily identified.

Some of his paintings were sold in Sotheby's, Christie's, and other major auction houses. His works are included in the permanent collections of the Musee d'Art Haitien du College Saint Pierre in Port-au-Prince, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Waterloo Museum of Art in Iowa. His works are also in many private and public collections worldwide. Gerard died in May 15,1988.
