Rare broadside, in French, of a letter by Toussaint Louverture to French General Jean Herne. Louverture was Governor General of Saint Domingue, Haiti's name as a then French colony. 7.25'' x 10.5'' document translates in part, ''…peace continues to be maintained all over and the calm…election has already given the first results…'' Dated 1799, five years before Toussaint would die in a French jail and Herne would sign Haiti’s Act of Independence from France. Show-through in margin from tape on verso and rough right edge. Good condition.
