Hadrian, AD 117-138. AE Sestertius minted at Rome, AD 1
Hadrian, AD 117-138. AE Sestertius minted at Rome, AD 119. Laureate bust right of Hadrian with drapery at left shoulder with band crossing chest. Reverse: Hadrian seated left on platform extending right hand to child held by woman, beside whom stands a second child. RIC 568 [as R2]; BMC 1160; C. 949. About Extremely Fine.

The personification of Liberalitas is first labeled as such on coins of Hadrian. This very rare reverse type refers to some generous grant to poor children, perhaps alluding to a donative or to the freedom of the progeny of free women and slave fathers. Juan Cayón, in his Los Sestercios del Imperio Romano, terms this handsome obverse bust style with the crossed band of the paludamentum as very rarely seen.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
Ex Knobloch collection (Stack's 1 V 80, lot 572, which brought $1100).
