London and New York : Macmillan and Co., 1871FIRST EDITION, with portrait, 3 folding maps, a folding table and 2 text illustrs, pp xi, (1), 275, (1), with half-title, 8vo, original red cloth, by Burn & Co, with their ticket, spine evenly faded and a little wear to rear outside joint (inside hinges not cracked) : an attractive copy. A valuable narrative, providing a vivid description of the difficulties of the journey from Toronto to Manitoba. Huyshe was a captain in the Rifle Brigade on the military expedition under Col. Garnet Wolseley which was sent to restore order at the Red River Settlement in 1870 after the Riel Rebellion. Starting from Thunder Bay, the expedition travelled via Lac des Milles Lacs, Lac La Croix, Rainy Lake, Fort Frances, Fort Louisa, Lake of the Woods, Islington, Fort Alexander, Lake Winnipeg, and down the Winnipeg River to Fort Garry.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) CHAPMAN ( Abel ).
