HUNT, HENRY J.
(1819 - 1889) Union brigadier general who broke the Confederate pursuit at Bull Run, as Chief of Artillery at Fredericksburg his 147 gun battery opened the battle. He is best remembered for commanding the artillery at Gettysburg, helping to repulse Pickett's charge. War-date A.L.S. "Henry J. Hunt" as chief of artillery, Army of the Potomac, 3pp. 4to., "Artillery Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac letterhead, June 22, 1865 to Brig. Gen. Theodore S. Bowers concerning the promotion of Bvt. Brig. Gen. Henry L. Abbot. In part: "...I have the honor to present for the brevet of major gen'l. of volunteers the name of Brevet Brig. Gen'l. Henry L. Abbot, Colonel 1st Conn. Artillery, and commander of the siege train of the Army of the Potomac…Maj. Gen. Meade…suggests the prospect of bringing the claim direct to the notice of the Lieutenant General…". On verso, Hunt penned an initialed letter to Abbot, in part: "…As to your case...I have had a talk with Gen'l. Meade who agreed with me that a direct application should be made to Gen'l. Grant…the Lord knows I have not bothered them much with the matter…I expect to…take a command of Inf. and Cavalry in the indian country…". Endorsement tipped onto the recto of letter-sheet.
