(1810 - 1883) Union major general who was at Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Humphreys' replaced Hancock, as commander of the 2nd Corps, after the Battle of Gettysburg. L.S. "A. A. Humphreys" with rank in another hand, 2pp. 4to., "Engineer Order No. 44", Washington, Sept. 11, 1866 concerning the appointment of Generals Barnard, Wright, Gillmore and Abbot, to conduct experimental trials on iron so as to be used in the "permanent defenses of the country". Printed copy of this order is tipped to the original. From Bvt. Brig. Gen. Henry L. Abbot's personal papers. Right margin wear, smudge affects signature, slightly toned and stained, else very good.
