FIRST EDITION, 32-pp, 8vo, recent wrapper : small stamp on title otherwise very good Binnie (1839-1917) was stationed at Nagpur in Central Provinces where in 1873 he constructed the waterworks and supply from Ambajiri, 4 miles away. With Major Lucey Smith he discovered coal at Warora ; this led to the construction of the Wardha–Warora branch of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway and the opening up of the coalfield, for which Binnie received a commendation from the government of India. He returned from India for reasons of health in 1873. Subsequent to his return he was influential, through approaches to the secretary of state for India, the marquess of Hartington, and the prime minister, for improvements in the terms of service for the public works department(ODNB).(2) BOURNE ( John ), C.E.
